She received a BFA in Painting from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2014, and is currently pursuing a Masters of Education in Counseling at the University of New Orleans. As a collective member of The Front Gallery since 2020, Haley has curated, collaborated, and solo-exhibited numerous art shows rooted in themes of identity, grief, and the body. In New Orleans, she has also exhibited at the Contemporary Arts Center, SHED Gallery, Carroll Gallery, Antenna Gallery, and Staple Goods Gallery. Outside of New Orleans, she has exhibited at Ashmore Gallery, Savannah, GA, Plug Gallery, Kansas City, MO, and Vernissage, Lacoste, France. The moment that solidified this friendship beyond undergrad was in 2014 when Luin mailed me (Ann) a pink balloon from Savannah to New Orleans. For the next 10 years, I would send updates and photos of the balloon as though it were a child or kitten. These pink balloon check-ins became the root of our long conversations about making art and contradictions in the art world, unpacking our coming out journeys, celebrating each other's queer joys and recovery milestones, comforting each other through heartbreak, reminiscing and contemplating the lives of our artist grandmothers. <img width="6000" height="4000" width_o="6000" height_o="4000" entwining self-discovery through grieving a once-able body with mourning lost loved ones. Central to this exploration is my maternal grandmother, Mary Ann Hammett Lyons, affectionately known as "Granny." Her departure from this realm marked my first significant encounter with death at the age of nine. My memories of her are quilted with sensory threads. Nicorettes. Shalimar perfume. The comforting aroma of Sister Schubert's biscuits. A hint of poodle. The texture of her hands and thick curls on my tiny fingers. The sticky sensation of painting my face with her lipsticks. The way she said, “Eacha Summuh Beescuts” —the imprint of these senses serve as portals to a bygone realm where Granny's presence once basked me in a cocoon of love and affirmation. She has remained close to my heart, but our altar-based relationship is made of a combination of anecdotes from others, romanticization, and smell. I know she learned to paint before age 7, but what fueled the flame of her art? I know she kept a gun in her pocketbook, but what shadows lurked behind her vibrantly painted canvases, pocketbooks, quilts, clothing, trashcans, and pillows adorned with flowers and butterflies? I know she had various addictions and died from Emphysema, but what lies at the root of her addictions? How did she cope? I know she had six children starting at age sixteen, but what did she really think about the world? What would she think of me? Why did she paint the matadors? Depicting both the youthful artist and the buoyant matron, I pay homage to her resilience and tenacity. She may have been fighting bulls with butterflies, but Granny was, above all, a fighter—a matador in her own right, confronting her struggles with grace and ferocity. I feared getting lost in the overwhelming grief of my grandma’s passing on May 6th of 2023. Grief that is tied to our complicated bond and a string of other tragedies I’ve struggled to slow down enough to fully feel- to allow myself to unfurl, to collapse into powerlessness, and to ask for help with all that pain. We were extremely close and our relationship was complex. Part of my grief-avoidance is guilt in facing confusing emotions - sadness, helplessness, resentment, trauma, joy, longing, and regret. She was a best friend, a powerful matriarch, and the oldest living artist I knew. She never stopped making work, even as she struggled to claim her artist identity. Her house was a refuge for me. At the end of 2021, I moved in with her when I had nowhere else to go and began working alongside my mom as my grandma’s live-in caregiver. It was a difficult and vulnerable time for me. Our relationship deepened and evolved and continues to teach me about forgiveness, acceptance, and intergenerational healing. I would often diffuse tension between her and my mom and dodge her unhealed projections and fears. And still, we cared for each other in many ways. I hauled wood and built her a fire every morning, got her favorite treats at the grocery store, and we’d stay up late talking about art, pain, and memory. I chose to include part of one series from the 70’s, when she was painting a lot of hockey players, because of the overlap with my fixation on athletic aesthetics, sport costumes, and wrestler masculinity. She was fascinated by equipment and boxy shapes and so am I. When I moved out of her house in 2022, we began painting together virtually on Monday afternoons. ‘What Surrounds Her’ is a painting we started together but were unable to finish before she went into the hospital. Right before entering hospice, she asked me “how do you tell the difference between living and dying?” While feeding her applesauce I replied, “I think you know more about that than any of us right now”. She chuckled, as if to say, you’re probably right. She then said, “We have to forgive, we have to forgive everyone. Do you forgive me?” I was shocked. I said “Of course, for anything, for everything. One thing I will always remember is how she would say, “I wonder why..?” - as an invitation to muse together and imagine possibilities. It wasn’t really about finding an answer, it was about wonder. A few years ago, I began building a divination/affirmation deck, inspired by my own healing practices. I brought this collection to my grandma in the hospital and her eyes lit up while flipping through the handmade deck. I taped her favorites onto a sheet next to her hospital bed and she cherished them in her final days. That handmade collection grew into what is now my ‘Holy Wonder Deck.’ ‘Our Time’ is a soundscape built from our piano lessons, field recordings, and late night conversations. Debussy’s Clair de Lune has always reminded me of her and appears in many ways throughout the track. This tune has followed me through life and when I am most unable to feel, music is the thing that always breaks the dam. ‘Clair de Lune’ references a poem by Paul Verlaine, “which depicts the soul as somewhere full of music in a minor key where birds are inspired to sing by the sad and beautiful light of the moon.” I had the blessing and challenge of being with her as she died. In her final two days, she was no longer verbal but my mom found a pathway to reach her through song. In an immersion of paintings, drawings, ceramics, and film, Ann Haley and Harley Holiday probe the intimate dialogues between past and present, partner and self, and vessel and body to reveal a narrative revolving around themes of mutual support, the evolution of the self, and the resilient nature of the human body. In their individual works, Haley and Holiday contemplate the nature of time itself by delving into the profound connection between paying homage to their roots and honoring their growth and how that connection shapes our understanding of self and identity. Embedded within these layers is backwards writing that acts as a mirror, both between the artist and herself, as well as herself and others. Within this mirror, she invites viewers to introspect on shared identity struggles, implying that “to look at me means you have to look at you too.” In her painting titled FLUID (what is your body holding onto?) Haley explores how trauma tends to settle in our body's most vulnerable parts. She reflects on the burden of chronic pain and her body's resistance to fluidity. Her piece face it (you have to) rigidly illustrates the depth one must reach to confront their inner struggles. In a dialogue with these themes, Haley's paintings like the girl with the green ribbon around her neck, SAD (it’s okay), secret waterfalls (safe place), feed me, mem map, and bird in the sky (how good it would feel to be) serve as gateways to her past. Artworks she made during what she terms “the before” (as an emerging artist between 2009 - 2014, prior to her life-changing car accident) undergo a profound transformation into rewritten narratives. We cannot fully exact our will upon clay; working with this medium forces us to move and bend in the way that it wants us to move and bend. As we shape clay, it shapes us in tandem. Much like how one cannot control what happens to a piece once it enters the kiln, we cannot fully exercise our wills upon our bodies. In the end, our human vessels will call out their needs to us: for rest, for movement, for touch and warmth and water. When we lean into the needs of our bodies, everything flows. It is much the same with clay. The material itself has a corporeal quality; it can bend and stretch, form and reform in a cyclical process of destruction and regeneration. In their multi-piece sculpture Kondie, Holiday exorcizes and makes visible their struggles with hypochondria. Through the construction of a swan-shrine acting as a benevolent higher power, Holiday provides comfort for the little clay bodies trapped in the all-consuming experience of health anxiety. Woven throughout Holiday’s sculpture and drawings are motifs of human and animal bodies, exploring the idea of more-than-human creatures acting as benefactors, talismans and guiding forces within our lives, as well as the animal natures intrinsic to the human experience. A situation that initially felt unfair and burdensome transformed into a&nbsp; moment of resilience and mutual care. Amidst bed rest, leaning on each other to complete daily tasks, and venturing to physical therapy together, they made their collaborative painting titled PT. HEAVY METAL ; heartburn HEAVY METAL is a series of 7 paintings that mirror what is left after peeling back the layers of healing physical and emotional trauma. Like an onion, the closer to the core one gets, the more raw and pungent pain feels. With that comes uncontrollable tears and unavoidable discomfort. I spent 7 years trying to manipulate my healing by pulling off the first few layers of a whole batch of onions but pausing when tears welled up. It was 7:57 AM on April 24, 2015; I saw a flash of the heavy metal bumper of an 18-wheeler headed straight at my driver’s side window. It looked like death, enormous, terrifying, yet somehow still glistening in the morning sun. Sometimes I feel like I died that day, or the me who survived isn’t the me who got T-boned on the way to work. I chose to swerve. Whip lashed. It was loud. I felt the weight, I still feel that weight. That weight feels even more ominous when I consider what would’ve happened had I not swerved, even more so when I wished I hadn’t. I chose life that day, unaware that it wouldn’t be easy. In Parable of the Sower, Octavia Butler says, “All that you touch, you change. All that you change, changes you. The only lasting truth is change. God is Change.” If the only truth is change, to survive, one has to adapt with change. On April 24, 2022, a heaviness came over me when I acknowledged that I had spent 7 years adapting with change. And adapting to what hasn’t changed because of that day. Having a metal plate in my cervical spine makes me feel heavy. Not heavy in the sense of weight, but heavy in the sense of not feeling light and free. Heavy in the sense that this metal plate holds my neck upright. Heavy in the sense that this metal plate reflects being unable to heal myself fully on my own. Heavy in the sense that even though it supports my head, I am still in pain. Heavy in the sense that it took having my throat slit open to utter the words “I’m gay.” Heavy in the sense that I had no control over the accident. Heavy in the sense that I am forever adapting to this change. Heavy in the sense that this is a lot to carry. My body gives, I take. My wise mind knows I owe her, but my wrong mind wants to punish her for it not being easy. 7 years of taking extra care of myself. 7 years of pain, at a level 7 out of 10, 10beingtheworstpainyoueverfelt. I am exhausted. I am angry. I am grappling with the chilling truth that this is my life. I have spent the most recent of those years trying to figure out how to feed a body that is starving for so much more than food, face to face with a choice again. Unaware again, that it will not be easy. In these works, I am (finally) peeling to the core; to the poignant moments that changed my life, chopping them up, allowing myself to become consumed by their harsh aroma before throwing them into a hot pot of oil. Ann Haley — heartburn utilizes nudity to showcase the vulnerability that myself and my subjects often don’t share with the world. Opening up about deeply personal emotional trauma and approaching emotional healing is a complicated experience that we often don't have the necessary tools to navigate.This body of work is a means to capture myself in a delicate light, exposing my insecurities and embracing the parts of myself I’m often afraid to share in fear of rejection. Working with nude models is a raw experience where the model exposes intimate pieces of themselves. This series started with the self-portrait titled The Fool, a piece that is empowering for myself and my body. Using old paint collected from my palate to create a flower-like crown, surrounded by tarot cards placed strategically, my gaze falls upon the ones most ripe with personal meaning. Each painting boasts a color and textural element that resonates with my subjects and their essence: they’re gay, femme, or both. As a queer woman who has only embraced coming out in the past few years, I feel connected to models who share a common ground in that self-exploration. This collaborative installation shows the repressed darker side of myself. It is the depression that I live with, depicted on the walls, on paper, on canvas and put into physical form. Distilling the human form down to the ligaments and bones, while going through the repetitive motions of physical therapy, I am building layers of paint to write my body’s topography, working each painting as I work my body through a different stage of healing. The marks I make delineate a space for the collision itself and the PTSD that came with it, the time spent in bed, listening to doctors, in surgery, in bandages and braces, doing exercises and stretches, the metal that is now fused to my cervical spine, and the pain that never really went away. But also a space for the body’s remarkable ability to strengthen, to grow and to heal. I began this process believing that healing means to be fixed; to be like before; a linear journey from broken to whole. Through my own cyclical process of growth and strain, I know that healing is not an erasure or extraction of what is hurting you, but the creation of spaces for holding that hurt, confronting it, wrestling it and loving yourself through it. These works investigate the liminal space that exists between one’s ability to cope and heal from trauma and one’s ability to accept and transcend pain. GOOD BAD POSTURE was exhibited at The Front in January 2021. Finally sharing these works was the key missing component in my healing process: communication. While having the space to vulnerably and loudly express the depths of my experience provided me with a sense of closure and acceptance, it did not dead the pain. A year later, I look at my past self and see how she falsely hoped that closure and acceptance would put an end to the nightmare. In reality, there is no end to healing. Chronic. Acceptance is key, but we have to continuously take care of ourselves to remain healed. We also have to ask for what we need. We live in a world where work is prioritized over body.&nbsp; People with chronic pain, who are otherwise “healthy” and not qualified for disability, likely have to work full time in order to have high quality health insurance. But what if working full time is not an option for your body? What if you spent years trying to find doctors you trust with your body? And it was taken from you, because you chose your body over capitalism? trauma from an accident with a semi-truck in 2015. Distilling the human form down to the ligaments and bones, while going through the repetitive motions of physical therapy, I am building layers of paint to write my body’s topography, working each painting as I work my body through a different stage of healing.The marks I make delineate a space for the collision itself and the PTSD that came with it, the time spent in bed, listening to doctors, in surgery, in bandages and braces, doing exercises and stretches, the metal that is now fused to my cervical spine, and the pain that never really went away. But also a space for the body’s remarkable ability to strengthen, to grow and to heal. I began this process believing that healing means to be fixed; to be like before; a linear journey from broken to whole. Through my own cyclical process of growth and strain, I know that healing is not an erasure or extraction of what is hurting you, but the creation of spaces for holding that hurt, confronting it, wrestling it, and loving yourself through it.
